The Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium is part of the Bung Karno Sports Hall (Gelora), a sports complex in the Senayan area which was built by Soekarno to welcome the 1962 Asian Games. Flanked by other venues surrounding it, such as Istora, Swimming Stadium, and Madya Stadium, Stadium Main Gelora Bung Karno is towering, becoming the center of the sports complex.

The admiration of SUGBK is also the fruit of the ambition of President Soekarno who wants Indonesia to have a world-class stadium. Borrowing 12.5 million US dollars from the Soviet Union, Soekarno succeeded in realizing his dream, just a few months before the 1962 Asian Games was held. In practice, SUGBK also became a place for political and music concerts.

Because it is not only used for football competitions, the Bung Karno Main Stadium needs treatment. But, in practice, SUGBK has also received a touch of renovation from the government.
